Body composition

Ideal body weight calculator

Four height-based formulas side by side — useful as a range rather than a single target.

Ideal body weight by formula

  • Robinson156.5 lb
  • Miller155.0 lb
  • Hamwi165.3 lb

"Ideal" weight is contested — the four formulas above can disagree by 5–10 kg for the same height. Treat them as a band, not a target.

What 'ideal' really means

The ideal-body-weight formulas were developed in clinical practice — mainly for drug dosing and for identifying patients outside a healthy range — not as physique targets. They take only height and sex as input, so they cannot account for muscle mass, frame size, or body composition.

Use the result as a sanity-check range, not as a number to chase. The body-fat and lean-body-mass calculators are better tools if your goal is changing body composition.

The formulas

Devine (male): 50.0 kg + 2.3 kg × (height(in) − 60)
Devine (female): 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg × (height(in) − 60)
Robinson (male): 52.0 kg + 1.9 kg × (height(in) − 60)
Robinson (female):49.0 kg + 1.7 kg × (height(in) − 60)
Miller (male): 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg × (height(in) − 60)
Miller (female): 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg × (height(in) − 60)
Hamwi (male): 48.0 kg + 2.7 kg × (height(in) − 60)
Hamwi (female): 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg × (height(in) − 60)

Frequently asked questions

What does 'ideal' actually mean here?
These formulas were developed in clinical settings to estimate drug dosages and to identify healthy weight ranges, not to set physique goals. They give a height-based target weight, ignore body composition, and don't account for individual variation in frame size.
Why do the four formulas disagree?
They were developed at different times for different purposes. Devine (1974) is the most commonly cited in medicine. Robinson (1983) refined it for narrower populations. Miller (1983) and Hamwi (1964) use different base values and per-inch coefficients. For most heights they fall within 5–10 kg of each other.
Should I use this to set a weight goal?
Loosely, at best. The figures here give a clinically reasonable range, but body composition matters far more than total weight for both health and appearance. If you lift, you may sit well above any of these numbers while being lean and metabolically healthy.
