What pace actually is

Pace is the inverse of speed — how long it takes to cover one unit of distance. Most runners think in pace per kilometre or pace per mile, because that's the unit that matches splits and watch displays. Track and cycling tend to use speed (km/h or mph) for the same information.

The formulas

pace (sec/km) = total seconds / distance (km)
finish time = pace (sec/km) × distance (km)
speed (km/h) = 3600 / pace (sec/km)

Frequently asked questions

What's a good running pace?
Highly dependent on training history and distance. A casual recreational runner might hold 6:00–7:00/km easy; a club-level competitive runner often races 5K at 3:30–4:00/km; world records sit near 2:34/km for the marathon. The honest answer is that 'good' is relative to your own progress.
Should I train at race pace?
Some, but not most. Classic endurance training puts about 80 % of weekly mileage at conversational easy pace, and 20 % at moderate-to-hard intensity. Spending too much time at race pace burns you out and doesn't develop the aerobic base that race pace ultimately depends on.
How do I convert between min/km and min/mile?
One mile equals 1.609 km, so a pace of 5:00/km is roughly 8:03/mile (5 × 1.609 ≈ 8.05 minutes). This calculator does both automatically.
